David Abouem à Tchoyi, a former high-ranking Cameroon government official and previously the appointed governor of the Northwest and Southwest regions, has passed away.
Abouem à Tchoyi played a significant role as a negotiator for the Cameroon government during the Canadian mediation talks. His involvement came after my insistence on the need for a well-known and high-level representative from the government. While his presence brought credibility to the process, the effectiveness of the negotiations was unfortunately undermined by some leaders’ preoccupation with partisan politics rather than prioritizing the well-being of the people.
The willingness of Paul Biya to explore a negotiated settlement is something that must be encouraged by all segments of society and the international community. With the conflict evolving into cartel-like activity by forces on the ground, causing immense suffering to our people, negotiations are now a moral imperative.
However, it has become evident that Ambazonia’s initially established groups and personalities can no longer be relied upon to take responsibility or push for meaningful change. They have become prisoners of their own logic and stances, placing their egos above addressing the human suffering caused by this protracted conflict.
The time for sincere dialogue and decisive action is now. Let us honor the legacy of those like Abouem à Tchoyi by committing to a path of peace and humanity.
