Response to Christmas Ebini’s Statement on the Arrest of Ayaba Cho
The arrest of Ayaba Cho has, predictably, led to a wave of reactions, including efforts to frame him as a victim of injustice. While I understand the concerns some may have regarding Norway’s decision, we must not allow this moment to distract us from the broader issue—the responsibility of leadership and the consequences of unchecked impunity.
The kind of excuses being made for Ayaba Cho are the same ones that have been made for certain Ambazonian fighters over the years, allowing them to grow unchecked in their actions, to the point where they have committed mass atrocities that now exceed even those of the Cameroon military. This is not speculation—it is a reality that many of our communities live with daily. When individuals are shielded from accountability under the guise of revolutionary solidarity, they begin to believe they are above the movement itself. That is how we have reached a point where armed groups, instead of protecting our people, have turned into a source of terror, carrying out kidnappings, extortion, and even executions against civilians.
If we are to move forward as a people, we must break free from this destructive pattern. Our struggle cannot be defined by defending individuals at all costs but by upholding the principles that give our cause legitimacy. Justice cannot be applied selectively—if we condemn the crimes of the Biya regime, we must also condemn those within our own ranks who have made war profitable at the expense of the people.
This is why leadership must be rooted in responsibility, not personal power. We must insist on a movement where discipline is enforced, where the rights of our people are protected, and where those who betray the struggle—whether they wear military uniforms or claim to fight for Ambazonia—are held accountable. No individual should be given a pass simply because of their status or influence. The failure to enforce this standard is what has allowed chaos to reign, turning some of our once-respected forces into lawless warlords.
The people of Ambazonia did not ask for a future where they would be caught between the brutality of the Cameroon military and the excesses of rogue armed factions. They deserve a struggle that remains focused on their liberation, not on protecting individuals who have lost their way.
As we reflect on Ayaba Cho’s arrest, we must take this as a lesson on the dangers of unchecked power. The real injustice is not that he was arrested, but that for too long, leaders have been allowed to operate without accountability, creating a culture where some believe they are immune from consequences. If we are to succeed, we must restore integrity and discipline to our movement. Our people deserve nothing less. Capo Daniel Chairman PRAP
