From Liberation to Extortion: The Escalation of Violence
The Anglophone crisis in Cameroon has transformed from a legitimate struggle for self-determination into a devastating cycle of violence, corruption, and widespread criminality. What started as a peaceful protest in 2016 escalated into armed conflict, supported by a population desperate to defend their rights ยน. However, leadership failures from both the separatist movement and the Cameroonian government have allowed the situation to spiral into a full-fledged kidnapping economy.
Leadership Silence: A Missed Opportunity for Reform
Both the separatist leaders and the Cameroonian government failed their people by remaining silent on the extortion and criminality committed by their fighters. This inaction allowed the practice to spread unchecked, blurring the line between political resistance and criminal enterprise.
The Kidnapping Economy Takes Root
Today, kidnapping for ransom has become deeply entrenched in west Cameroon/Anglophone Cameroon. With infrastructure destroyed, schools shut down, and unemployment soaring, many young people see no alternative but to engage in criminal activities.
A Call for Action: Addressing the Root Causes
The time for action is long overdue. Both sides must recognize their shared responsibility in allowing this crisis to worsen. Immediate steps must be taken to dismantle kidnapping syndicates and restore law and order.
Steps Toward Resolution
- Accountability and Public Denouncement: Leaders must publicly denounce criminal elements within their ranks.
- Rehabilitation Programs for Youth: Establish educational centers, clinics, and job training programs.
- Economic Rebuilding: Rebuild infrastructure, provide employment opportunities, and revitalize key sectors.
- Peaceful Negotiation and Reconciliation: Engage in meaningful dialogue to address root causes.
- Strict Anti-Kidnapping Measures: Introduce stronger laws, set up special task forces, and increase security.
The people of Anglophone Cameroon deserve better than a conflict that has devolved into a criminal enterprise. It is time for both sides to step up, end the violence, and restore peace and stability to the region.
